Collecting For Zambia - A Way To Give

A list of basic necessities for a missionary family heading to the field brings excitement and joy to a fellow couponer and myself during Sunday service. This is what couponing all comes down to for me. I remember similar situations in the past where I wished I could give more while bought a couple items. Now my first thought was: "I wonder how much toothpaste they can actually carry over with them?" I'm know I'm not the only one who was questioning this! Can I challenge all of you to join me in blessing this family BEYOND their expectations!

We have till June 28 to overflow their cup. During that time I will be posting specific posts entitled "Collecting For Zambia" that will alert you to deals that are specific to the needs listed on the insert. Leave a bag in your trunk or by the garage door that you can fill and refill with items to bring to the donation box at church (we know how easily good intentions can be foiled by an urgent hunt for missing shoes on a Sunday morning).

Let's start with a bang! Walgreens put out a $5 off $25 purchase coupon for Wed and Thurs. Common Sense With Money has a great scenario to get nearly $60 worth of items FREE in her post here! Many of these items are on the list: toothpaste, shaving cream, insect repellent. There is even a Benefiber drink mix that I wonder if they could use?

Eating Out At Home

I was inspired today by an article posted at Money Saving Mom about saving money by making restaurant food at home. Yes, I know the whole purpose of eating out is to save yourself the mess and clean up and to just get out. But when you figure it, those same recipes you eat at the restaurant can be made for a fraction of the cost at home. Truth be told, we just ate out as a family today for lunch at our favorite breakfast food place. It was a real treat, but not cheap even after splitting a meal and having the kids split. And as the waitress was passing by with someone else's lunch on her tray, I nearly laughed at the simplicity of it and could only imagine how much they were going to pay for it. I could made a far better version of that meal myself and for just a couple dollars. So, inspired by this post here, we're having Panera-At-Home tonight. On the menu is chicken wild rice soup (my favorite recipe) and french bread (courtesy the bread-machine). I think I'll drop by Dillon's to find a salad and Sargento salad topper to finish it off. Norah Jones, and candles, giggles and talking, coffee and cookies for dessert. Perfection! Right from my own kitchen.

Other Eating Out At Home Ideas:
Papa-Johns-Made-By-Mama ** If you have a bread machine there are great recipes for pizza dough that make no mess. Put the dough in the bottom of a pie tin, lay out sauce and toppings and the tin will keep it all contained as your kids make their own pizza. Add a movie and root beer floats for dessert!

McDonald's-With-A-Backyard-Playland ** Fast Fixin' chicken nuggets, frozen fries from the oven, apple slices, chocolate milk all served in the backyard in a paper lunch sack personalized with their name. Throw in a dollar toy (or even a toy from their room, kids love to pretend!) and you really have a Happy meal. Throw the same nuggets on some lettuce with your favorite veggies or in a tortilla with lettuce and dressing and you've treated yourself.

I-Love-Garden-Dining (get it!?) ** Nothing is easier than mostacolli. Cooked pasta, sauce, kielbasa or favorite meat, with cheese over top in a glass pan in the oven. Large salad in a large bowl and bread sticks from the dough-boy. Treat the family with a splurge on your favorite flavored tea with ice and straws. Mmmm, ice cream with a warm cinnamon sugar sauce for dessert. Set up the card table in the backyard with tea lights and table cloth. Tell the kids to put on something semi-nice and surprise dad with a lovely evening.

Really none of this is much more work than the average meal you make everyday, but the special touches will make it a special moment for the family and a guaranteed memory.

Sometimes You Have To Humiliate Yourself

Arby's just wants to see how much we're willing to humiliate ourselves just to get a free drink. Well, I'm in. Tomorrow, May 6, you can get a free iced Fruitea by saying "I'm parched. Fruitea me!" Maybe I'll say it will real gusto just to make them feel sorry they even came up with the idea.

I did call and confirm with Arby's on 21st St to make sure they're participating. Go enjoy!

Free Fiber One Bars

These are our family's absolute favorite granola bars! Let's hope Target is well stocked. Go here to read Common Sense With Money's scenarios for making a good deal with these.

Meal Planning

This should always be the first stop on your way to saving money. Trust me on this one. Since coming back from a week vacation I have yet to make a meal plan and I have been completely lost. I went grocery shopping for our regular staples and yet have nothing to make one solid meal. I'm completely lost and beyond frustrated knowing that I need to go shopping again to get that can of spaghetti sauce, vegetables, pasta... just to make it through this week. A meal plan is a worthy tool if only to take the stress out of what you're eating each night. I love cooking! I hate thinking of what to cook.

When making your meal plan think of all areas: breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks. Make a list of the usuals on a note card. For example breakfast at or house is almost always cereal, eggs, french toast, and toast throughout the week. I know I need to keep these ingredients on hand every week, but don't need to plan specific days. Snacks are the same way. However, lunch is very specific at our house (just ask my husband who's been in trouble for making mac & cheese on the wrong day). Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday we're almost always rushing home for lunch so Spaghetti Os and hot dogs are saved for those days. Tuna, sandwiches, and mac & cheese for days when I don't have two kids hanging on my leg waiting for lunch. And of course plan "Mommy-lunches" in your menu as well. I rarely eat what I feed my kids for lunch. My favorites are salad, veggie quesadillas, and homemade fried rice.

Now if you're a creature of insane habits like me eventually you may not need as detailed meal plan. I ate the same lunch nearly everyday while teaching. I like my regular things and know exactly what I'll need to put on my shopping list for the week. Therefore, I print out a month calendar and create a month's plan of dinners. This also helps me save money by using up as much of the ingredients I buy as possible. For example, if I buy kielbasa for jambalaya one night, the next week I plan mostacolli to use the rest of it up. I also like to get the planning done once a month instead of once a week.

Finally, plan your weekly menu based on your shopping week, not the calendar week. I usually shop in Saturday so my menu week begins Saturday and goes through Friday. If you don't shop till Monday when the kids are back in school don't start you menu week Sunday or you'll be going hungry that day.
